On September 29th, 2022, Insurdinary's research team set out to conduct their sixth survey with 42 people on their opinions of what is lacking in our provincial healthcare system. We collected some really interesting results.
When asked "In your personal opinion, what is lacking in our provincial healthcare system"? There was a pretty wide range of answers with several people echoing the more popular answers.
Of the folks that were spoken to:
7 were men ages 18-29
8 were women ages 18-29
3 were men ages 20-55
12 were women ages 20-55
6 were men ages 55+
6 were women ages 55+
Some of the services that many folks think are lacking in our provincial healthcare system are:
Dental care
Vision care
Mental health accessibility
Massage therapy
Physiotherapy
Physical rehabilitation clinics
Prescription medication
Access to free birth control pills / feminine products
Better emergency services, specifically urgent care clinics like they have in the US
Safe injection sites
It was interesting that younger people seemed to speak quite heavily about mental health accessibility. 18 people had mentioned this to us during our research. The cost of therapy is expensive, especially if you have to pay out of pocket. With mental health being at the forefront of our thoughts nowadays, it seems vital that everyone has access to proper care and services.
An answer we expected to hear coming up was the mention of dental care. 12 people had mentioned dental being included in our public healthcare system. Dental checkups and procedures can be incredibly costly if you don’t have coverage. The prices increase if you need major restorative dental work. This is a real concern for Canadians.
Similarly, 4 people mentioned vision care - which we also anticipated would come up in conversation. Unless you are covered by provincial healthcare, a trip to the optometrist can be expensive, especially when you need to purchase lenses for yourself.
There were a few people who had mentioned services to help with pain management such as: physiotherapy, massage therapy, and physical rehab clinics. All of these services (especially if you need to have weekly visits) can put a strain on your wallet since they are not covered by our provincial healthcare system.
Several young women mentioned prescription medication, birth control pills, and free feminine products. We have seen access to free feminine products in European countries and the benefits of it.
One gentleman also spoke about better emergency services. He suggested a system like the US which has urgent care clinics to help divert some of the traffic in our hospitals.
We also had a mention for safe injection sites which could save thousands of lives each day.
The folks who we spoke to shared some really interesting ideas, many of which could be solved with private health insurance.
