Nigeria Security Measures for travelers

You are responsible for your personal safety if you are traveling to Nigeria but you can take advantage of the timely and reliable information provided in our Travel Advice to make an informed decision with respect to your travel abroad.

Risk Level

Nigeria – Avoid non-essential travel

There are unpredictable security situation throughout Nigeria and noticeable risk of crime, terrorism, armed attacks, kidnappings, and inter-communal classes in Nigeria so avoid non-essential travel while in Nigeria.

Avoid all travel to the following locations:

The northern and Middle Belt states of Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Kano, Kaduna, Yobe, and Plateau
The Niger Delta States of Abia, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bayelsa, Imo, Delta, Rivers, except Port Harcourt but avoid non-essential travels here.

Due to the incidence of crime, exercise a high degree of caution in Abuja, Calabar, and Lagos.

Travel Health Notice – Zika virus

The Public Health Agency of Canada advises that Canadians practice special precautions when visiting Nigeria due to Zika virus.

Entry / Exit requirements

Nigeria, just like other countries, can decide who passes through its borders and the Government of Canada cannot interfere with the country’s decision especially as it relates to the entry and exit requirements.

Passport

The type of passport you use to travel determines the applicable entry requirements. Check with the transportation company to find out about the applicable passport requirements.

Zurich Canada signaled that it is entering Canada’s travel insurance market as it appoints John Thain as its vice-president – travel, accident, and sickness.

Thain will be in charge of launching personal leisure travel, business travel accident and supporting accident and sickness products in Canada.

Zurich Canada expects to begin selling personal travel products from the start of 2019. Thain reports to Greg Irvine, the head of Zurich’s specialty products for Canada. He has held several positions as an underwriter, independent consultant and program administrator before joining Zurich.
