In 2014, a businessman bought a Tibetan mastiff for a whopping $1.9 million. While this is amazing, what is more surprising is the fact that the breed was abandoned en masse just four years later.

Pedigree dogs are very expensive. The Secretary of the UK Kennel Club, Caroline Kisko, said that people invest in pedigree dogs because of the traits they exhibit.

The major reason why the cost of a breed could soar is because of its rarity. Tibetan Mastiffs were once sought after for their status and rarity and so cost up to $1.9 million but in 2018, it was reported that thousands of Tibetan Mastiffs were being abandoned in China.

A veterinarian at the RSPCA, Cat Wood, said: “if a breed becomes very popular, then breeders can charge a lot more”. Wood also said that while there are breeders who care a lot about animals and breed them for their abilities if they are not able to get enough puppies out, unscrupulous breeders may enter the stage and make a lot of money.
