Vancouver is the most populated city of British Columbia, located in the Lower Mainland part of the province. It is part of the Greater Vancouver Area metropolitan area with a city population of 631,486 and a metro population of 2,463,431, based on the 2016 Canadian census; thus, the metropolitan area is the third most populated in Canada.
The city of Vancouver has a land area of 114.96 square kilometers, and therefore a population density of 5,492 per square kilometer, the highest in Canada. Besides New York City, Guadalajara, San Francisco, and Mexico City, Vancouver is the most densely populated city in North America with above 250,000 in population. The city is also the most diverse in ethnicity and language since more than 52% of the population have a first language other than English.
Due to Vancouver’s strategic location, it is the largest industrial center in Canada. It is home to the largest and most diversified port in Canada, the Port Metro Vancouver, which does over CAD$172 billion in trade with more than 160 different trading partners. The port generates a GDP of $9.7 billion and an economic output of $20.3 billion.
The city is also home to the headquarters of several companies such as forest product and mining companies. It is also a center for aerospace, software development, video game development, animation studios and so forth.
Vancouver is an important tourist destination and has interesting arts, theatre, dance, film, and culture. It has renowned theatre companies such as Art Club Theatre Company, dance centers such as Scotiabank Dance Center, film festivals such as Vancouver International Film Festival and so forth.
