Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is a Canadian city, located in the province of Quebec in the eastern Montérégie, southeast of Montreal. It is situated at the northernmost point of Lake Champlain on the west bank of the Richelieu River. Based on the 2011 Canadian population census, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu has a city population of 92,394 and in 2014, its population was estimated to be 94,636.
The city experienced a population increase of 5.6% from 2006 to 2011. It has a land area of 234.20 square kilometers and a population density of 409.2 per square kilometers. The city of Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is home to the Carrefour Richelieu regional shopping mall that contains 115 stores. Based on the 2006 population census, only 27.3% of the city population work full-time in the city, 6.6% commute to Montreal for work, 2.1% work in Longueuil, 1% in Brossard, 0.9% in Chambly and 0.7% in Boucherville.
Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu is divided into five sectors designating the former municipalities that make up the city. The sectors comprise different neighborhoods and they include Saint-Jean, Saint-Luc, Iberville, Saint-Athanase, and Acadie. These municipalities were amalgamated with the former Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu to form the new Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu municipality.
The 2001 population census of the various constituent municipalities shows that Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu had a population of 37,386, Saint-Luc 20,573, Iberville 9,424, Saint-|Athanase 6,691, and L’Acadie 5,526.
