According to Yves Berthiaume, the president of the Funeral Service Association of Canada, Saskatchewan should clarify how the funeral industry will be compensated for funerals for poor people. He said there should be clarity on the details about the coverage of $2,100 for funeral services for Saskatchewanians on social assistance.

Berthiaume added that the amount is not enough to cover all expenses and that funeral homes feel that they are being burdened. Berthiaume said they should have come to the industry and taken a second look at it and also enquired about the concerns of funeral home workers to address them.

He added that the cost of providing ritual services is not cheap and they are not going down. Irrespective of your life status, every family deserves to be respected when they bury their dead. The province reduced the amount it pays to funeral homes for clients on social assistance on July 1, 2017, from $3,850 to $2,100 in order to raise funds for the province.

The province also promised to cover the cost of basic preparation of a body, regulatory fees, and a standard casket or urn, and transfers but activities like viewings are left to families to cater for.
