A Manitoba judge and a chartered accounting firm managing a funeral home in Winnipeg in receivership want the Funeral Board of Manitoba to settle issues involving ashes and assets at the home.
Lazer Grant Inc. representatives met with Judge Chris Martin met on Tuesday, April 24, 2018, to present a report of their progress in getting the Wheeler Funeral Home ready for resale. Wheeler Funeral Home, Cemetery and Crematorium entered into receivership ordered by the court on March 20, 2018. The funeral home is now managed by Lazer Grant LLP, a chartered accounting firm.
Winnipeg police financial crimes unit already launched an investigation on a fraud report involving the funeral home. Lazer Grant said they need a former funeral director at the Transcona business, Chad Wheeler, to help them in finding funds and records for prepaid services and pre-purchased cemetery plots.
Tom Frohlinger, counsel for Lazer Grant, told Judge Martin that the major problems are lack of records and lack of co-operation. Collin LeGall, the managing partner at Lazer Grant handling the case, confirmed that a body that has been kept in the funeral home for three months has finally been released and is on its way out of the province on a Tuesday morning.
The family paid $8,000 to Chad Wheeler for body transportation and also funeral service. The funeral took place but the body transportation did not happen. Commenting on the event, the daughter-in-law of the dead man said it is so hard losing a loved one, especially when the death is so sudden, and it's even more difficult in such a situation as theirs.
She said the situation is like a nightmare after finding out that in March that the body did not arrive in February. CBC News refused to disclose the family’s name because they did not want to upset or alarm other members of the family about the incident. The managing partner Joel Lazer said that the body is embalmed and sealed inside a blue coffin and Lazer Grant Inc. would be absorbing about $2,000 to ship it out of province.
