Zimbabwe Travel Insurance News

A Zimbabwean couple who were found to be involved in crimes against humanity for working together for years in the Zimbabwean National Army lost their legal appeals that sought to avoid deportation from Canada.

Richard Tapambwa and his wife Stensia Tapambwa served in the Zimbabwean National Army for 20 years and 16 years respectively. The couple was both promoted to the rank of staff sergeant in the data processing unit of the army. They served the army under the authority of the former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, who faced crimes against humanity and condemnation of human rights abuses.

According to the couples, Richard Tipambawa expressed political views against the erstwhile ruling party in March 2001 and had to leave the country to the United States where they lived for over 10 years without applying for refugee protection. Thereafter, they came to Canada and claimed political asylum.

Their claim was declined the following year on the basis of their complicity in crimes against humanity committed by the Zimbabwean army during the military service, according to the Immigration and Refugee Board.
