The history of Martinique has been shaped over the years by European settlers, Asian workers and African slaves. Martinique has a lot of attractions ranging from the beautiful beaches and awesome gastronomy to Mount Pelée.

Martinique is a French-speaking country. So, the majority of visitors and tourists who visit the North America country come from other French-speaking countries. Being partly a French-speaking country, Canada is one of the countries whose citizens visit Martinique for tourism, trade and other purposes, especially from Quebec.

When traveling to Martinique, Canadians need to have the right Martinique travel insurance or private medical plan for comprehensive coverage against medical emergencies, accidents or hospitalization abroad. Your provincial plan may not provide the coverage you need abroad. However, with additional coverage, you can be absolutely covered against any emergency.

The Public Health Agency of Canada issued warnings on 2013 to Canadian travelers intending to visit St. Martin/Sint Maarten and Martinique, advising them to take special precautions to prevent mosquito bites. This is due to the previous warning that confirmed cases of the chikungunya virus in the French-side of the island shared with Sint Maarten.

According to the agency, the cases mark the first time that locally acquired transmission of the virus is detected in the Region of the Americas. The Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) ravaged the island and resulted in a total of 1,836 cases of hospitalization from December 2013 to January 2015. The virus caused half of the people to fall ill and few people to die. Even after years, a lot of the affected people still struggle to grip objects, dress, close their fists and so forth.

The agency recommended that travelers wear long-sleeved shirts or long pants and also use mosquito repellent early in the morning and late in the evening and afternoon.
