Since the founding of modern Malaysia, it has shared friendly bilateral ties with Canada. The two countries relate in terms of people-to-people ties, economic ties, security cooperation, and so forth.

The people-to-people ties between Malaysia and Canada are improved by their cooperation in education and tourism. Several Canadian universities maintain study programs and exchange with Malaysia. In 2015, over 1,300 Malaysians were studying in Canada and more than 70,000 Canadians visited Malaysia in 2016.

Furthermore, about 12,000 Canadians claim Malaysian ancestry and 3,000 to 4,000 Canadians live in Malaysia, according to the 2006 Canada’s population census. When traveling to Malaysia, it is important that Canadians have the right Malaysia travel insurance policies or private medical coverage for adequate protection in case of medical emergencies, accidents or hospitalization.
