Funeral homes in British Columbia say they have been subsidizing the cost of funerals for years for people who are not able to pay funeral costs because the provincial government is not providing a sufficient amounts to cater for the cost.

According to the Ministry of Social Development and Social Innovation, the province of British Columbia spent $3.2 million for funeral services for close to 2,000 people who do not have relatives or resources to fund their funeral costs in 2013, $885,000 was spent on Vancouver Island alone. This corresponds to an average of $1,600 for each funeral.

Ellen Henry, the executive director of the B.C. Funeral Association based in Victoria, said that the province usually caters to just a fraction of the cost, leaving the rest which could amount to several hundred dollars up to the goodwill of the funeral providers to cater. The provincial outlay has been constant over the years but according to Henry, it is lower than the amount provided by Alberta which is closer to the actual cost of providing funeral services.
