Nova Scotia is the first Atlantic province where residents can purchase insurance in funeral homes to prearrange funerals. However, before you sign up for the coverage, you need to ask some questions. For instance, you may not be covered as you expect if the person dies too soon or if you fail to declare an already-existing condition.
The change which was implemented on September 1, 2016, reduces red tapes and offers more options for funeral homes. But according to Adam Tipert, owner of Sweeney’s Funeral Home in Bridgewater and chairman of the Nova Scotia Board of Registration of Embalmers and Funeral Directors, such features already existed.
Tipert said that the option now is simply keeping the money with the insurance company to look after its financial aspect rather than funnelling it to a trusted company. According to Rodger Gregg, registrar of Cemetery and Funeral Services with Services Nova Scotia, funeral insurance is a more manageable payment that can make it easier to afford a prearranged funeral.
Gregg added that the change was implemented to align Nova Scotia with other countries such as Alberta, British Columbia, Quebec, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.
