One great benefit of being an employee is having your health insurance paid for by your employer. It's a huge relief to know that you and your family are covered should anything happen.
However, employees also don't get as much choice when it comes to their health insurance. They have to accept whatever plan their employer chose whether it fits their needs (or their families' needs) or not.
And sometimes employment ends for various reasons and health insurance suddenly becomes your responsibility. Also, those who are retired, are between jobs, are those who prefer to work freelance need coverage as well.
For those looking for health insurance, the Manulife FollowMe plan may be the exact plan for you and your family. Keep reading to see if Manulife health insurance is best for you.

The FollowMe Plan
Manulife health insurance offers a plan called FollowMe. It's designed to offer individuals and families comprehensive health and dental coverage.
The FollowMe plan is perfect for those people whose employment and group benefits have ended, retirees, and those who aren't currently insured.
To be eligible, you must apply within 60 days of your group health benefits ending.
Those who apply within the time limit will enjoy guaranteed acceptance as a Manulife plan member once their premium payment has been made.
There are no medical questionnaires or exams for those who apply within the 60 day time period. You can apply after 60 days but a full medical underwriting is required after that point.
Some FollowMe Group Benefits
Those members with three or more children will enjoy special rates. You can stay on the plan as long as you like. And you can even earn AIR MILES reward miles just by being a Manulife Plan member.
Manulife Basic Plan
While there are four plans offered by Manulife, we're just focusing on the FollowMe basic plan.
With the basic plan, there are no Manulife group benefits covering dental.
However, if you have a dental emergency, your basic plan will help you cover part of the costs.
Prescription Drug Coverage
If you choose the Manulife group basic plan, you're entitled to 80% off your prescription drugs. That includes coverage for generic drugs.
You should be aware that there's also a shared dispensing fee. A dispensing fee occurs when you shop at a pharmacy to fill your prescription. Every pharmacy sets its own dispensing fees for filling your prescription.
This cost covers other services such as maintaining and verifying your records, providing drug information to your physician, stocking your medication, providing patient counselling, and even operating costs like rent and salaries.
This plan limits that amount so make sure you do your homework to find the best pharmacy to ensure you limit any additional costs.
Those on the basic plan are covered with their prescriptions up to $450 each year.
Vision Care
Unless you wear contacts, most people with healthy eyes do not require annual exams. In fact, depending on your age group and the health of your eyes, it's possible to go five years without needing an eye exam.
But with Manulife group basic care you're entitled to a vision exam once every two years.
The plan covers up to $150 and goes towards prescription lenses and frames, contact lenses, and even laser eye surgery.
Hospital Benefits
No one ever wants to end up in the hospital but accidents and illnesses happen despite our best efforts to stay healthy. On the Manulife health insurance basic plan you'll receive preferred hospital accommodations in excess of the standard ward room rate.
And, if you aren't able to obtain preferred accommodations, you'll receive a cash benefit for each day you go without preferred accommodations. The cash benefit is in lieu of the room cost.
Your plan also helps to cover the cost of ambulance services and Lifeline(R) Emergency Response Service.
Extended Group Benefits
As a Manulife plan member, you're entitled to a few more benefits. One such benefit is that you're entitled to receive a lifetime maximum of $100,000 in extended health care.
You also have access to registered health specialists and therapists such as psychologists and speech therapists.
For those with disabilities and/or serious health struggles, you'll be pleased to know that your plan covers some of your expenses relating to nursing equipment, prosthetic appliances, hearing aids, and even durable medical equipment.
Your plan even covers some of your homecare should you need it.
Lastly, you can access support and expertise through the Health Service Navigator(R) anytime you have a question.
Travel Benefits
For those who love to travel, there are additional group benefits to take advantage of. For an additional fee, you can get coverage for emergency medical expenses when traveling.
Depending on how long you plan to travel during your trips, you can get covered for either 15 or 30 days worth of travel. However, if you choose to enroll in travel benefits, you're covered for an unlimited amount of trips each year.
The maximum age to receive this coverage is 69 and all travel insurance terminates once you reach the age of 80.
You do not need to answer any medical questions to receive these group benefits and there is no deductible, either. And you're covered up to $5 million in medical benefits for each trip you take.
