Neapolitan Mastiffs Pet Insurance News

A 3-year-old, 125-pound Neapolitan Mastiff, Martha is ugly, lazy, glassy, and big. She’s the world champion in the 29th annual World’s Ugliest Dog Contest.

From the beginning of the contest, Martha was a favorite of the Northern California crowd. The judges didn’t have to hear her signature snore to award her a winner.

Kerry Sanders, one of three judges who gave Martha the crown asked, “do you know you just won the World’s Ugliest Dog Contest?”. Since Martha couldn’t talk, at least humanly, her handler Shirley Zindler answered for her: “I would gloat, but I need a nap”.

By winning the contest, Martha was awarded $1,500, as well as a trip to New York for media appearances, and a flashy trophy.

Martha was neglected by the Dogwood Animal Rescue Project in Sonoma County. She was nearly blind when she was rescued from nearby Sebastopol. According to Zindler, the Neapolitan Mastiff was able to see again after several surgeries.

She was the only animal in the year’s contest too big to be held by her handler. The Mastino beat out 13 other dogs, most of which were smaller and older, to win the contest.
