Nancy Price, a 57-year-old woman, died while trying to save her blind Dalmatian from a massive fire that engulphed a townhouse complex in west Ottawa. The fire caused $500,000 damage and injured two firefighters.

Neighbors said Nancy managed to escape the fire with burns on her face and arms but she ran back into the burning building with an aim of saving her 13-year-old Dalmatian, named Damien.

Her neighbor Kate Rodriguez said, “she went in to get her dogs, but I didn’t’ see her get out”. She added that she only saw a German Shepherd, Buddy, get out but didn’t see the Dalmatian.

The neighbors also explained that two people tried to stop Nancy from getting in but they could not hold her back. Both she and her dog didn’t make it out. Fire officials later saw the burnt body of a woman and a dog.

Nancy’s nephew, Andrew Neville, said that her aunt is a dog lover. She had two sons but she takes her dog as her son as well. “Every story was about her dog, especially Damien, that was her one true love”, he added.

Neville pointed out that Nancy would have done anything to save Damien and she even said life is not worth living without the dog. Ottawa Fire Captain Robert LeClaire said “once a pet is inside or you think it is inside, there is nothing you can do at the time. If you see fire or flame inside a burning building, you should stay out”.
