Before Eddy came for rabies vaccination on a Friday, he was a happy Airedale Terrier but before the weekend was over, he was lethargic, vomiting and limping. The situation was so bad that he was fed water through a big syringe.

The pet owners, Dave MacDonald and his wife Debora, had to take their dog back to the clinic and spent about $15,000 in bills yet the dog was not himself. MacDonald said that the dog would have been put down if they had not gotten pet insurance.

The seven-year-old dog was taken from his local clinic in Orleans to the Alta Vista Animal Hospital where he spent about 12 days in intensive care.

A lot of blood work, x-ray, arthrocentesis and ultra-sound readings were carried out. The dog underwent internal and cardiac exams. Many of his systems were not working well and the blood tests show that he was normal before the inoculation.

The pooch had a fever, pancreatitis, bronchitis, myocarditis and multiple-joint arthritis. A lot of dogs were prescribed including cyclosporin, a steroid and a pain-killer that cost up to $800 a month.

The couple pays $130 a month in pet insurance for their two Airedales. MacDonald and his wife are both disabled and use the dog as quasi service animals. They are on the hook for 20% of the cost of the treatment which is up to $4,000.
